Shimane art museum is a beautiful streamlined building at the edge of a sea.
If one enters the building, the large lobby and through its glass the sea (Shinji-sea) spreads out. The glass reflects happenings of the lobby so that it seems like there is a dream world above the sea.
Bodies floating on the water surface, cars driving by and emerging rays of light and in the next moment children walking around in the lobby…
It is like being in a dream film.
Drinking coffee while looking at all that, a unique inner peace can be felt, which one cannot experience at any other museum.

Moving forwards silently and ascending the stairs in the back, there is the permanent exhibition.
While going through the permanent exhibition, there was the picture of Sakamoto Hanjiro: “Picture of a cow”.
When I was young, I was inspired by Sakamoto Hanjirou and bought his art books, researched about his view of life and learned a lot through these acts.

The picture from Sakamoto at the Shimane art museum was drawn 1915.
Out of Sakamotos works the horse pictures are famous but in fact his cow pictures are outstanding works.
Among them, the picture “Usurebi” (1912) is the most famous work.
To this picture the writer representing Japan, Natsume Souseki said “This cow is thinking (…) and one also wants to go into the picture to think.”.

Sakamoto went to study abroad in Europe but he said “There is not anything to learn in Europe”
This means that Sakamotos works were solely born from Japanese spirit, therefore his works represent “Japan” the way it is.
Using motives of cows, horses and Nou-masks he continued to represent Japan as it is.
At the Shimane art museum one can experience all of this.

　島根県立美術館は湖のほとりにある美しい流線型の建物である。
　館内に入ると広いロビーのガラス越しに湖（宍道湖）が広がるのだが、ガラスにはロビー内の様子が反射して湖の上にまるで夢想の世界を作り出す。人の半身が水面に浮かんでいたり、外の過ぎ去る車が一直線に白い光を放ったかと思うとロビーを歩き回る子供がそこに突然現れたり、と…。まるで夢想映画の中にいるようである。それらを眺めながらコーヒーを飲むひとときの安らぎは他の美術館では味わえない。
実にいい。
　そこから静かに進んで、奥の階段をのぼったところに常設展示観がある。
常設展示観を見ていくと、その中に坂本繁二郎の「牛の絵」があった。
私は若いころ坂本繁二郎の作風に魅せられて画集を買ったり、繁二郎の人生観を探ったり、と随分と勉強させてもらった。
　ここ島根県立美術館にある坂本の牛の絵は大正４年（1915年）に制作されたものだ。坂本の作品では馬の絵が有名であるが、実は牛の絵に秀作が多い。
　その中で「うすれ日」（1912年）という作品は特に有名である。その作品を見た日本を代表する小説家夏目漱石は「この牛は考えている（中略）そして自分も絵の中に入って考えたくなる」と言わしめたものである。
　また坂本はヨーロッパに留学したが「ヨーロッパに学ぶものなし」と言っている。つまり坂本の制作姿勢は日本の精神から生まれているものであり、描かれるものは「日本」そのものだったと言える。
　牛や馬。そして能面などのモチーフを借りて日本そのものを表現しつづけた画家である。
島根県立美術館にはそれがある。
